Fundamentals of Materials Sciences (summer semester 2024)

The course encompasses all aspects of contemporary materials sciences. It places a special emphasis on cultivating an understanding of the connections between the microscopic structures of materials (such as atomic or crystalline structures, nanoscale imperfections, etc.) and the observable mechanical or electrical properties exhibited by different materials. Furthermore, it seeks to impart insights into the deliberate engineering of materials for a diverse array of applications. Additionally, the course aims to enhance students' comprehension of everyday processes from a materials physics perspective. By the end of the course, students should be proficient in linking macroscopic material characteristics to their microscopic origins through an understanding of structure-property relationships.
